when i flipped through my monthly elle canada issue the other day and found out they had reviewed douglas coupland's new book, eleanor rigby, i nearly just about spilled persian tea all over my innocent sister (who is older than me, yet considerably shorter... awwwww).
i have always found that women's magazines have a tendency to review fluff books (with the occasional mention of interesting mind-expanding books), but this time, elle canada went for coupland, who is well.. coupland. while it suspiciously reeks of how-do-we-fit-in-can-con-this-month syndrome, who really cares? the motives don't matter, it's the fact that i can actually see what elle canada has to say about today's po-mo literature. and that's fascinating.
also, the only reason i'm still subscribed to this magazine is because of the elle girl and elle guy editorials. they are that good! i always flip past the advice column (written by everybody's favourite person, pamela anderson), and i always laugh at the fashion shoots because they.. well.. suck. at that point i always dive into a rant about how canada doesn't know how to do fashion, and in about another 30 days, the cycle repeats itself.
back to coupland: his new book is ultimately on my list to santa, but what the fuck is up with the canadian cover? thankgoodnessly, i've only ever seen the american cover at bookstores. but why the sudden interest in bringing canadian readers back to the horrible world of 80s computer graphics? why doug, why?
